In the last few days, I experienced the end of many things. The end of my first year of medical school, the end of my days at my 5714 Howe St (my apartment), the end of my Pittsburgh days and the end of studying like crazy (for a bit). But with that has come the chance for beginnings of many wonderful things! En route to North Carolina yesterday, I gave some thought to a few things I'd like to do on this trip.
Goal #1: Learn how my body works via challenging it physically
Goal #2: Bike maintenance!
Goal #3: Become skilled at building/fixing one thing in particular, like carpentry or electrics or roofing.
Goal #4: Find out one really cool fact about every town we stay in, particularly the ones that seem like they're 'in the middle of nowhere' (Today I found out that in Arkansas, one thing to look forward to is the Ozarks! Like Where the Red Fern Grows and it's where you get H2O!)
Goal #5: Figure out what I want to do with my life, and solidify my ideals about how I want to practice medicine. (hah, in one summer? riiight...)
Today, I met many of the people on my team, and I'm still trying to get everyone's names down. We went for our first bike ride, to a lighthouse on the coast, where we got a special guide from a 91-year old, who helped strip and paint the bricks of the white house waaay back in the 1920s. The ride was about 15 miles and nice and flat. It was great to have everyone out there together in a huge line, dominating the road! Or rather, the shoulder of the road! It's pretty cool being out there, and the drivers really can't help but notice and yield to the 30 bikers all with really hot road bikes and flaunting their hot BIKE AND BUILD jerseys and large calves. ;o)
Anyway, good times from NC. We set out tomorrow on our way! After we dip our wheels in the Atlantic Ocean, we're off to Swanquarter, NC, 62 miles from here. And after that it's just another 3354 miles to the Pacific!!

BON VOYAGE, Anita!! (This is Jess btw). I'm so incredibly envious of you, but of course that's my own problem since I could've been right alongside you. Say hello to the Atlantic for me. Have you picked out the 2-3 hot & sexies? ;)
I miss you already, as I sit here drinking my -you won't believe the coincidence- Ozarka bottled water!
GOOD LUCK HAVE FUN I MISS YOU!!
I tell everyone I know that I have a friend biking across the country...they usually stare at me for a few seconds, blink, and then look really confused. And then I have to repeat it. Hahaha. :)
LOVE YOU AC UNIT! Hope your second day went well!
I read "bike maintenance" and you sounded so philosophical about life, which then reminded me of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The guy was crazy (as in institutionalized) for a while and I think he found meaning to his life at the end of the book after riding his bike across parts of the country. We just took psych and I so I can officially diagnose you as not having a psychiatric or personality disorder, but don't let that stop you from reaching your goals. Good luck!
