The Kindness of Strangers

Day 5: Belhaven to Greenville, NC (55 mi)
(excerpt from my entry in the B&B group journal) I think many of my fellow bikers would echo me in saying that despite tender butt bones and sore quads, backs, and arms, this ride was the best yet. I felt energized this morning and cruised down the beautiful open roads of North Carolina. At one point, 15 of us were biking together in a line, and it felt great to be a force out on the roads, one that the cars definitely had to take notice of! In fact, we were indeed flagged down at an intersection by a reporter from Beaufort County. She interviewed us and took our picture for the local paper, it was great!

Along the way, we encountered the hospitality of several strangers, which I was amazed by and I believe that some of it must be attributed to the fact that we're bikers on a long journey. Thank you to Quarterback snack shop at the marina in Bath (the oldest town in NC and home to Blackbeard) for your ice cream at 9am this morning and pirate eye patches! Thank you to the random fresh produce stand off of 92 that I took a tomato off of (don't worry, I left a dollar and a Bike and Build card in its place). Thank you to Briley strawberry farm which provided us shade, directions, and delicious strawberries! As the days pass, I hope that we'll continue to stop at any place that piques our interest along the way, because biking offers an ease to explore places that driving cannot. And of course, meeting the strangers that make up America is really one of the things that this trip is all about.
